Munson Off to Juco, then GW!

From the Recruiting Insider's Breaking News Desk: Point guard Nigel Munson will transfer from Virginia Tech to attend a junior college this fall, a source with knowledge of the situation said this afternoon.

Munson, a 2006 All-Met at DeMatha High, plans to not play basketball in the 2007-08 school year and then enroll at George Washington for the 2008-09 school year and play for the Colonials, the source said.

Munson is unable to transfer directly from Virginia Tech to George Washington because the Hokies granted him a release from his scholarship on the condition that he could transfer to any school except George Washington. Munson was so upset with this stipulation that he appealed it to a committee at Virginia Tech, but that was denied, the Roanoke Times reported.

It has never been said publicly why Virginia Tech would not allow Munson to transfer to George Washington. Hokies Coach Seth Greenberg has not returned repeated phone calls. Speculation in basketball circles has been that Virginia Tech believes GW tampered with Munson's decision to leave Blacksburg. Also, there is speculation that Virginia Tech did not want Munson to transfer to a school it plays in the future; the Hokies host the Colonials on Dec. 9.

Munson, though, apparently was so intent on going to George Washington that he is willing to pay his own way to a local community college - likely either Prince George's or Montgomery-Rockville. Once he attends a two-year school, Munson then would become a recruitable student-athlete again, able to sign a letter-of-intent with any college. His year of junior college would be like a redshirt year; he then would have three seasons of eligibility remaining.

The biggest thing for Munson would be staying in top form or trying to improve his game.
